Small Bowel Biopsy

A definitive diagnosis of CSID can be made by demonstrating the absence of sucrase-isomaltase in a small intestinal biopsy of the distal duodenum or of the proximal jejunum.

A biopsy may be obtained either with a Crosby capsule placed in the jejunum or with the endoscope in the distal duodenum or proximal jejunum.

Method:

Mucosal tissue is homogenized and incubated with the appropriate disaccharide substrate. Enzyme hydrolysis results in the formation of glucose. A quantitative measurement is then done on the glucose yielded.

Specimen Requirements and Shipping:

Approximately 5 mg of small bowel should be collected through endoscopy for the complete enzyme analysis.

The tissue should be placed on the wall of a small, tightly capped, plastic tube appropriately labeled with the patient name, date of birth, ID number, date specimen collected and referring physician name. A 1.5 mL microtube works well. Please do not place the tissue on gauze, filter paper, or use any type of support medium.

Freeze immediately and keep frozen for shipping on dry ice.
Package according to regulations regarding shipment of infectious material and pack with enough dry ice to last 48 hours. Ship overnight by appropriate courier (Airborne / Fed Ex).

Laboratories are closed weekends. When shipping, please ship overnight and ensure a weekday delivery.
